| dc.description.abstract | This paper explores the evolving nature of masculinities within Zimbabwe’s environmental movements, highlighting the critical transition from patriarchal norms to sustainable practices. By examining how masculinities contribute to ecological degradation, the study illuminates the potential for redefining masculinity as a force for ecological stewardship and social responsibility. The findings indicate a significant shift among male activists who are rejecting patriarchal values associated with exploitation. Instead, they embrace masculinity identities that emphasise cooperation, care, and ecological responsibility. This shift is evident in grassroots movements where men actively participate in conservation efforts, challenge gender stereotypes, and promote inclusive practices that benefit both the environment and marginalised communities. The paper enhances our understanding of how gender dynamics impact ecological outcomes, providing valuable insights for activists, policymakers, and scholars involved in sustainability efforts. It further contributes to the discourse on masculinities and environmental movements by offering a localised perspective from Zimbabwe, highlighting the often overlooked need to integrate masculinities into environmental studies, especially from the Global South. | |
